Booking your Maternity and Newborn Sessions

Welcoming your baby is a huge milestone for any size family, and I am honored to be a part of it! I recommend setting up a phone consultation to chat with me about your pregnancy, your style, as well as your expectations and vision for your sessions, but it's not required. I love getting to know my clients and making sure our personalities are a great fit as my hope is to be your family photographer and watch your family grow over time!

Everyone begins their search for a photographer at a different time, but my hope is for clients to book in the second trimester to allow for ample planning time and customization of their sessions.

Tell me everything- What should I know and expect?

When do Maternity Sessions take place?: My recommendation for first-time parents is to schedule your Maternity Session between 30-33 weeks. Because schedules and weather can both be tricky to juggle I would lean more towards choosing a date around 30 weeks, then choosing a backup date around 31-32 weeks in case of rain or if you feel your bump hasn't quite yet "popped" as much as you were hoping for your session. Ideally though, we want you to be as comfortable as possible and the longer in your pregnancy that you wait the more stress we'll put on your body, the more swollen you'll feel. An earlier maternity session means the more time you'll have to enjoy those images and settling into your nesting.
What does the Maternity Session entail?: Maternity Sessions can take place anywhere we would have a normal couples or family session. Charleston is full of amazing places so maybe you'd like to re-visit a spot from your wedding or engagement, or maybe you try something new that has really been a memorable place for you both since you got married.

I have three packages for Maternity Sessions, all of which include access to my Client Closet Wardrobe if you choose. My Client Closet has lots of variety from more casual looks to more luxury and styled, as well as a variety of sizes for my moms to be. Using dresses from the Closet is completely optional, I want you to be as casual or as fancy as you'd like!
When do Newborn Sessions take place?: I offer in-home newborn sessions that typically take place when your baby (or babies) are between 5-15 days old. However, your healing time is just as important so if you're still in the recovery process from your birth that bracket of time is really flexible. The benefit of an in-home session is that flexibility while making sure you're as comfortable as possible. Babies usually sleep best swaddled when they're within that 2 week period, but older babies can do really great for their sessions as well.
What does an in-home Newborn Session entail?: My in-home newborn sessions usually take place during the mid-morning or early afternoon hours when your home is getting the most natural light. The most popular spots in the home for your newborn sessions are the nursery, master bedroom, or we can even use a well-lit living room, or sun room. Where ever feels like home to you, we can capture your family there. I keep my family portion of the session lifestyle focused and pretty simple. We always start with full family, featuring any sibling portraits if you have other little ones, we can even include your fur babies! Once the family portion of the session is complete I will then move on to my posed portion of your session for the baby only which mostly focuses on a swaddled and sleeping baby. I bring along props like bowls, crates, textures, swaddles, hats and headbands to create stunning portraits of your newest addition using natural light. The props and things I bring along can be as colorful or as simple as you'd like, I always get your preferences from the pre-session questionnaire you've filled our prior to my arrival.

I also have three different levels of packages for my Newborn Sessions which you'll see below. The sessions vary by how many images you'd like in your gallery, and set-ups you'd like me to bring along.

A postpartum friendly Client Closet is also available if you're absolutely stumped on what to wear for your Newborn Session.
Can I book both Maternity and Newborn, what's the benefit there?: Booking both your Maternity and Newborn Sessions with me gives you peace of mind that you've got it all covered! We can take care of everything in the beginning so that you can relax and really enjoy the experience without juggling more things on your plate. You'll also have a seamless full gallery of your journey from bump to baby, and be able to add to that gallery with any future bookings- a little family gallery time capsule!

While I don't offer discounts when booking both sessions I do offer incentives like free prints, albums, and other great perks of booking both of your sessions with me. There are a few bundle options to choose from based on your preference of packages.

Prep Guide: You'll receive custom a Prep Guide catered to Maternity and Newborn, before each of those sessions. Everything from what to wear, how to prepare, and what to expect from start to finish. My goal is to put you at ease and take care of as many of the fine details as I can. I also have questionnaires for my clients that can be completed at your leisure to help me get to know your style preferences and what props to bring along to your newborn session.
Rain Date: The weather here in Charleston can be very unpredictable and changing by the hour. All clients that are booked for an outdoor session will select an initial choice, and backup choice in my schedule so that we have a set plan in place in the event of a rain out. Just one more thing to put your mind at ease.
Wardrobe: Wardrobe advice and assistance is available for all clients. For moms and moms-to-be I have an extensive Client Closet available to use for your session with a variety of sizes and styles.
Post Processing: I take the time and care to make sure my moms to be have all their curves in the right places, so between proper posing and editing you look your best. For newborn clients we take special care to make sure their skin looks clean and smooth, but not overworked. Galleries are always delivered within 2 weeks so that your baby is STILL a baby as you get to enjoy your images.
Professional Prints and Products: As my Client you will have access to one of the leading professional print labs located in the United States. These professional labs go above and beyond the consumer labs you may be used to taking in account color, clarity, and customer service. While I do allow my Clients to print from anywhere they'd like, you'll have direct access to order these professional prints and products from your online gallery.
Print Release: All Clients and those who participate in the session will be given a digital Print Release that may be used at any consumer or professional print lab of their choosing. While prints and products are recommended to be ordered from the lab linked to your online gallery, I know that certain requests call for different vendors.
You're a VIP: All my Maternity and Newborn families are automatically welcomed into my VIP Client Group to have first dibs on scheduling, mini session offerings, special email offers for first birthday bookings and more! We're family now, get used to it!
Birthday Wishes: Each Newborn Client receives a very special gift from yours truly to help celebrate their big day and remember the tiny baby days, too! Just one more way I love to let you know I'm thinking about your little one!

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book?: I recommend booking your sessions in your second trimester starting with a phone consultation. We want to aim to photograph you at 30-34 weeks for maternity and your baby between 5-15 days old when possible.
How do I schedule my newborn?: We all know that babies can come any time they feel ready, so booking your session with me allows me to reserve time in my schedule no matter when your baby arrives. At first, we just book your due date in my schedule. If we have a maternity session scheduled this is a great time to meet and chat about your progress and touch base about any induction or c-section dates that might be scheduled. Once you have your baby just shoot me a text or email with your expected discharge date and we schedule your session for a day when everyone will be home during best lighting hours. Typically newborn sessions take place between 10 am and 2pm.
What if my baby is in NICU?: NICU stays are common for many babies and can vary in length based on the time or circumstances of your birth, medical conditions or precautions. It's important not to stress and allow the wonderful team of nurses and doctors to provide the best care for your little one. If you're expecting a NICU stay we can re-asses your newborn session scheduling any time. My goal is to always provide my services in the comfort of your home in the safest way possible for babies of any age. Sometimes the expectation of the session must change for older babies, but the important thing to remember is that no matter when we do your session, we will highlight your family and little one in the best way possible!
What precautions do you take to prevent the spread of COVID-19, RSV, etc?: This is an excellent question for any expecting parent to ask and does change as CDC guidelines and recommendations are ever-changing. For starters, I became fully vaccinated as of April 23, 2021. I will always be monitoring my own health and will report any symptoms out of the ordinary and reschedule a session when necessary. When healthy and upon arrival, proper hand sanitation and washing is always key and is done before handling babies as well as sanitizing of props. Masks are available for my use at your request, the health of your baby and your family is my top priority.
How does payment work?: All sessions or bundles require a $300 retainer to book and secures your maternity and/or due date in my schedule. Plantation locations require an additional retainer to secure the grounds in the location's event schedule. The final payment for each session is due on the day your session takes place.

During your consultation we chat about your style, sizing and colors that you wear most. I will typically make recommendations for you based on these things. Nearly all of my dresses are made with a cotton jersey stretch and believe it or not, work really well on woman from size 4-16. I do have dresses for women of all sizes, and if you have any concerns about fit I will bring options for your maternity and newborn sessions. Due to the cleaning and sanitation process of dresses I do not allow for try-ons before the session, only the day of.
Who do you recommend for Hair and Makeup?: If you haven't thought about this yet, I definitely encourage you to! Hair and Makeup services are worth every penny to pamper yourself before your Maternity and/or Newborn Session to get you looking and feeling your absolute best. Remember how gorgeous you felt on your wedding day, we want that warm fuzzy feeling again! I recommend a simple style or curl and subtle makeup that looks natural, yet defining.

How do I know if I have good lighting in my home?: I send out a Pre-Session Questionnaire to all my expecting parents to gauge the lighting available in your home. In addition, I do have lighting available that I bring along to all sessions to supplement for darker rooms, cloudy days, etc. So it's nothing to really worry about!
