Charleston Senior Sessions: A Trend That’s Gaining Momentum
Charleston’s rise as a go-to location for senior portraits is part of a larger trend of seniors opting for destination shoots. Whether it’s a city known for its beauty, history, or unique landscapes, seniors are increasingly willing to travel to a location that matches their personality. Charleston, South Carolina specifically offers the perfect blend of stunning scenery and cultural richness, making it a top choice for those looking for a unique experience and has become one of the most popular destinations for high school seniors looking to capture the essence of their final year in stunning senior portraits. From its historic charm to its coastal beauty, the city offers an array of scenic backdrops that make every photo a work of art. In this blog I want to highlight the wonderful seniors I had the pleasure of working with this season and talk about why so many seniors are flocking to Charleston for their big day in front of the camera.
A Picturesque, Historic City
Charleston is known for its rich history, and its beautifully preserved architecture provides an ideal setting for timeless senior portraits. From the cobblestone streets of the French Quarter to the elegant antebellum homes in the historic district, Charleston exudes old-world charm. Seniors can take photos in front of vibrant pastel-colored buildings, grand oak trees draped in Spanish moss, or along the waterfront with views of the Charleston Harbor.
The city’s blend of Southern tradition and modern flair gives each portrait a unique character, whether you're seeking a classic look or something with a bit more edge. The variety of backdrops allows seniors to express their individuality, whether it’s with a sophisticated shot in front of a historic mansion or a more casual look with the ocean in the background.
Coastal Vibes
Charleston isn’t just about its history—it's also about the breathtaking scenery. With its mild climate and proximity to the coast, the city provides stunning landscapes perfect for outdoor photo shoots. The Battery and Waterfront Park offer majestic views of the harbor, while Folly Beach and Isle of Palms give access to sandy shores, calm waves, and a laid-back vibe. These natural environments allow seniors to showcase a relaxed, beachy side, making Charleston a perfect blend of city sophistication and coastal casual.
Diverse Photo Locations throughout Charleston
One of the main reasons high school seniors flock to Charleston is the wide variety of locations available to match different personal styles and preferences. For those who enjoy a more urban vibe, the city’s downtown area is filled with colorful backdrops, rustic textures, and vibrant streets. The iconic Rainbow Row—a row of historic pastel homes—is perfect for those looking for a unique and colorful backdrop.
For seniors who prefer something more natural, Charleston's many parks, plantations, and gardens provide lush greenery and tranquil settings. Hampton Park and Charles Towne Landing offer picturesque gardens and centuries-old trees that provide an enchanting environment for photos. Magnolia Gardens is also an option if you don't mind the steep fee.
Warm Southern Hospitality
Charleston is known for its welcoming Southern hospitality, and this extends to the photographers like myself who call the city home. I am very accustomed to working with high school seniors and am skilled at creating a comfortable environment for the shoot. This is especially important for teens who may feel nervous or self-conscious in front of the camera. Charleston's laid-back, welcoming culture ensures that seniors can relax and enjoy the experience while their photographers capture their best moments.
Abby states "This session was so fun and I love how my pictures came out! I was worried since this was a new experience for me, but Erin was amazing and helped every step of the way! Also her communication was incredible! We got many emails answering every possible question before my session, which made me feel much more comfortable going into it!"

Senior portraits are an important milestone in a person’s life, and having them taken in Charleston offers the kind of timeless appeal that will look beautiful for decades to come. The combination of classic architecture, natural beauty, and Southern elegance gives seniors a variety of photo options that will never go out of style. Whether you choose to go for a dramatic sunset shot on the beach or a more formal look in front of a grand estate, Charleston's landscapes provide a picture-perfect backdrop.
Alyssa (pictured below) writes "[Charleston] is beautiful and I wanted to do something different then what everyone else in my grade was doing. I had so much fun. I was laughing constantly and I loved the experience. [Erin] genuinely made the experience so good. I was never uncomfortable or uneasy. From the moment I had met [her], [she] was enthusiastic and excited which helped me match that energy!"
Family and Friends Can Enjoy Charleston Too
While senior portraits are a personal milestone, many families make a trip to Charleston a part of the process. Some families even hop in on the fun just for a short time which is absolutely encouraged! Charleston is known for its culinary scene, arts, shopping, and attractions, making it a great spot for families to visit. After the photoshoot, families can explore the historic district, take a carriage ride, or enjoy delicious Lowcountry cuisine together. This makes Charleston an ideal destination not only for capturing memories but also for creating new ones.
Charleston, South Carolina, offers high school seniors a stunning combination of history, culture, natural beauty, and Southern charm, all of which come together to create the perfect backdrop for unforgettable senior portraits. Whether you’re drawn to the city’s historic architecture, coastal beauty, or lush gardens, Charleston has something for every senior looking to mark this milestone in a memorable way.
